Windows or Linux - What to Choose?

If you are new to web hosting, it can often be confusing what the difference between Windows and Linux hosting is. At the most basic level, the biggest difference is that Windows hosting allows you to host a website language called .Net and ASP as well as Access Databases / MSSQL Databases.

If you have had a web developer produce the website for you, the question to ask them is: What language and database (if any) is my website developed in?

If they say any of the following: HTML, Flash, PHP, Mysql, Perl we strongly suggest using a linux server to host your website (although it is possible to host these sites on our Windows servers)

If they say: ASP, .Net (dotnet), Access or MSSQL / SQL Server, you must use Windows for these technologies.

If they say: Java, JSP, Python, Coldfusion or Postgres please contact us so we can ensure we can provide you with a satisfactory solution as these technologies require a more customised service.

If you already have an account with us, we suggest you login to your Control Panel using the details you received in your welcome email and check if you are using “Plesk” (Windows) or “Cpanel” (Linux). We have found that clients generally prefer to have new accounts created with the same Control Panel that they are currently using as they are familiar with it's layout and features.

Dreamweaver, Frontpage and FTP Clients can use either Windows or Linux. As our customer, you are provided with a Control Panel and so the underlying Operating system of Windows or Linux is not really important to you.

From our technical perspective, we feel that the Linux servers provide the ability to offer a better managed service, with greater flexibilty. We have technicians who are skilled in both Operating System technologies, so you have a great support team behind you.
